How is Tri-Polar RF different from Thermage and Bi-Polar technologies?
The first generation of RF technology, known as Thermage, used one electrode to deliver electrical energy and a return pad connected to the body to close the electrical circuit. The electrical current had to pass through a large part of the body and flow through the vascular system so that there was no control over penetration depth.
The second generation, Bi-Polar technology, used two electrodes, with the current flowing between the two. This confined the treatment area somewhat, but still didn't achieve effective focus.
Since both Mono-Polar and Bi-Polar RF technologies are not focused, both usually require much higher energy to achieve clinical results. This high energy heats the skin that is near the electrodes. This causes pain and a higher risk of burns and skin damage. In addition, these older technologies required cooling mechanisms to mitigate these risks, which resulted in less efficient heating of the skin layers.
How Tri-Polar Radio Frequency treatments work
Tri-Polar technology painlessly delivers focused and optimal radio frequency energy to the skin and subcutaneous fat layers. Fat reduction/body contouring
Since fat cells are more resistant to high frequency electrical current than other skin cells, they heat up more quickly. This heating effect is useful in shrinking fat cells for body contouring. Heating the fat cells accelerates fat metabolism and cause fat cells to shrink. The rise in temperature forces fat cells to secrete fatty acids (liquid fat), which is disposed of via the blood and lymph system.
